SGPC Urges Punjab CM to Ban Kangana Ranaut's 'Emergency'

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has called upon Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to prohibit the screening of Kangana Ranaut's film 'Emergency' in Punjab, citing concerns over historical distortions and potential harm to Sikh sentiments. SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami, in a letter to the Chief Minister, emphasized that the film portrays events such as the 1984 attacks on sacred Sikh shrines, including the Golden Temple and Akal Takht Sahib, in a manner that suppresses the truth and aligns with an anti-Sikh agenda. He warned that releasing the film could provoke outrage within the Sikh community.

The SGPC has previously communicated its objections to the Punjab Chief Secretary and has sent representations to all Deputy Commissioners in the state, urging them to prevent the movie's screening. Despite these efforts, the committee expressed disappointment over the government's lack of action. Dhami stated that if the film is released as scheduled on January 17, 2025, it will naturally evoke anger and protests within the Sikh community, and the SGPC will be compelled to launch strong protests across Punjab.

The film, directed and co-produced by Kangana Ranaut, who also portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has been at the center of controversy with Sikh groups alleging that historical facts have been distorted and negative stereotypes about Sikhs are being perpetuated. The SGPC has claimed that the film not only defames the Sikh community but also involves the character assassination of Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale, which the Sikh community cannot tolerate.

In response to the objections raised, the Central Board of Film Certification had sought several cuts to the movie after Sikh groups raised concerns over the portrayal of the community. However, the SGPC has expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of communication regarding whether the objectionable scenes have been removed. The committee has demanded that the film be shown to its representatives prior to its release in theaters to ensure that the content does not misrepresent historical events or hurt Sikh sentiments.
