Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has convened a Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting on Monday, following directives from the party's high command instructing Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara to postpone a separate gathering of SC/ST legislators.
This development comes amid Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President D.K. Shivakumar's efforts to mobilize party members through the 'Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan' program, which has been rescheduled to January 21 in Belagavi after being postponed due to the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The high command's intervention aims to prevent internal discord reminiscent of the rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A legislator aligned with Shivakumar noted that both the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister have been urged to mitigate potential conflicts.
In a display of unity, Shivakumar held a joint press conference with Parameshwara, Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi, Food and Civil Supplies Minister K.H. Muniyappa, and Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar. Shivakumar emphasized the absence of factionalism within the party, stating, "None of us have differences. If there is a difference, it should be among you (the media). Who said we have a crisis?"
Regarding the postponed SC/ST legislators' meeting, Parameshwara clarified that it was intended to review resolutions for the welfare of these communities, initially discussed at a convention in Chitradurga before the 2023 Assembly elections. He stated that the meeting was not canceled but deferred to accommodate AICC General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala's participation, denying any political motives behind the gathering.
Parameshwara asserted, "If someone says they will not tolerate the SC/ST meeting, we are not bothered. We will give a befitting reply as we have that power." He also mentioned plans to invite Shivakumar to the rescheduled meeting, underscoring its transparency and focus on addressing issues faced by Dalit communities, including cases of atrocities.
The 'Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan' program, spearheaded by Shivakumar, aims to reinforce the party's commitment to the values of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, as well as to protect the Constitution. Originally scheduled for December, the event was postponed due to the demise of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and is now set for January 21 in Belagavi.
These developments occur against a backdrop of speculation regarding a potential leadership change in Karnataka after March 2025. While both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar were contenders for the Chief Minister's post following the May 2023 Assembly elections, Siddaramaiah assumed the role, with Shivakumar serving as Deputy Chief Minister. Reports suggest a possible rotational chief ministership, though no official confirmation has been provided by the party.
