Fog and Cold Wave Disrupt Transport Across Northern India

A severe cold wave accompanied by dense fog has led to significant disruptions in flight and train services across northern India, particularly affecting the capital, Delhi. Visibility dropped to zero in certain areas, causing delays and operational challenges for both air and rail transportation.

At Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, over 100 flights were delayed due to the adverse weather conditions. While no diversions or cancellations were initially reported, authorities cautioned that flights lacking appropriate landing equipment might face difficulties. Major airlines, including IndiGo and SpiceJet, issued advisories warning passengers of potential weather-related delays. Flight tracking platforms indicated average delays of eight minutes for numerous flights.

The dense fog also impacted train services, with several trains at New Delhi Railway Station experiencing delays. Passengers faced extended waiting times as schedules were disrupted by the low visibility.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Delhi's temperature dropped to 9.6°C, with air quality deteriorating into the 'very poor' category, recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 351. This level is significantly above the 'good' range of zero to 50, indicating hazardous pollution levels.

In Uttar Pradesh, cities like Lucknow recorded temperatures around 8°C. Authorities responded by setting up temporary shelters to provide refuge for the homeless, offering some relief amid the harsh conditions.

The cold wave extended to Jammu and Kashmir, where Srinagar experienced sub-zero temperatures at -1.3°C. Snowfall in the region further disrupted daily life and impacted flight operations, prompting airlines like IndiGo to issue travel advisories regarding potential schedule changes.

In Rajasthan, Jaipur recorded temperatures around 10.2°C. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma inspected night shelters, interacted with the homeless, and distributed blankets to ensure adequate arrangements were in place for those seeking refuge from the cold.

The IMD has forecasted that these severe weather conditions are expected to persist, with predictions of light to moderate snowfall in the western Himalayan region over the next several days. Heavy snowfall is anticipated in Jammu and Kashmir, potentially exacerbating the existing disruptions in transportation and daily life.

Residents across the affected regions are advised to exercise caution, particularly when traveling, and to stay updated with the latest weather advisories. The combination of dense fog, low temperatures, and poor air quality poses significant challenges, underscoring the need for preparedness during this period of intensified winter conditions.
