The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its decision to contest all 70 seats in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections without forming alliances, marking a strategic shift from previous coalition approaches. In the 2020 elections, the BJP had partnered with the Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), allocating two seats to JD(U) and one to LJP. Despite this collaboration, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secured victories in all three constituencies, contributing to its overall win of 62 out of 70 seats, while the BJP secured only eight seats.
Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva emphasized that the party's grassroots workers, who have been active in their respective areas for years, should be prioritized in candidate selection. He noted that the previous alliances did not yield significant benefits and that the party leadership has been apprised of this perspective.
In response, a senior JD(U) leader indicated that discussions with the BJP are ongoing and that it is premature to make definitive judgments about the alliance's future. The leader stated that the national leadership would make the final decision regarding the continuation of the partnership.
The BJP is expediting its candidate selection process for the forthcoming assembly polls. Lists of probable candidates have been submitted to the central leadership, and the party aims to announce its candidates soon, possibly following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's planned events on December 28 and January 3. The selection process involves consultations with the party's seven Delhi MPs to finalize candidates based on winnability, with a focus on fresh faces, including women and young leaders with strong grassroots connections.
The Aam Aadmi Party, led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, has also declared its intention to contest the elections independently, dismissing the possibility of an alliance with the Congress. Kejriwal stated that AAP would rely on its own strength in Delhi, while maintaining its association with the INDIA bloc at the national level.
