Wrestling Federation President Reacts to Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic Disqualification

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the Paris Olympics due to being 100 grams overweight has stirred significant controversy and reactions within the wrestling community and beyond. Sanjay Singh, President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), expressed his deep disappointment, describing the situation as "extremely sad for the country" and pledging to do "whatever possible" to support Phogat.

Phogat's disqualification occurred during the weigh-in for the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling event. Her father-in-law, Rajpal Rathi, has accused the central government and former WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of conspiring against her. Rathi argued that such a minimal excess weight could have been easily managed, suggesting that if Phogat had cut her hair, it would have sufficed to meet the requirement.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has distanced himself from the WFI, denied involvement, suggesting that the association and the government should consult the Olympic Association to address the matter. The disqualification has prompted calls for an investigation, with Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav and MP Dimple Yadav urging for a thorough review to uncover the true reasons behind the decision.

The incident has sparked widespread reactions, with BJP MP Karan Bhushan Singh and National Vice President of the WFI expressing regret over the disqualification, recognizing it as a setback for the country. BJP MLA Prateek Bhushan Sharan Singh also conveyed his sadness over the news, acknowledging the emotional and symbolic impact of the disqualification on the nation.

Sanjay Singh Bablu, National President of the WFI, voiced his sorrow, emphasizing the high hopes placed on Phogat to bring home a gold medal. He revealed that efforts were made to reduce her weight overnight, but they were ultimately unsuccessful, leading to her disqualification. Bablu assured that the federation would appeal the decision in an attempt to rectify the situation.

Phogat's disqualification has not only highlighted the stringent regulations of Olympic qualification but also brought attention to the broader issues within the Indian wrestling community. The allegations of conspiracy and the call for an investigation suggest underlying tensions and the need for transparency and accountability in the sports administration. As the story develops, the wrestling community and fans await further updates on the appeals and potential investigations surrounding this controversial disqualification.
