US Advocates Democratic Interim Government in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has plunged into political chaos following the abrupt resignation and departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The United States is closely monitoring the situation and urging the establishment of a democratic and inclusive interim government. The Biden Administration emphasized that the interim government should be based on democratic principles, rule of law, and the will of the Bangladeshi people.

Prime Minister Hasina fled the country amidst escalating anti-government protests, which have claimed over 300 lives. The Bangladesh Army, led by General Waqar-uz-Zaman, has stepped in to fill the power vacuum, announcing an interim government in a televised address. General Zaman assured the nation of the army's commitment to maintaining order and urged all parties to cooperate.

State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller reiterated the US stance that the future of the Bangladeshi government should be decided by its people. Miller highlighted the need for all decisions regarding the interim government to respect democratic principles and the rule of law. He also called for full and transparent investigations into the violence and deaths that have occurred, ensuring accountability under Bangladeshi law.

In response to inquiries about Hasina seeking asylum in the United States, Miller stated there were no such requests. He also conveyed condolences to those affected by the ongoing violence and human rights abuses, emphasizing the importance of justice for the victims.

The White House National Security Council spokesperson echoed these sentiments, commending the Bangladesh Army for its restraint and urging all parties to restore peace swiftly. The spokesperson expressed deep concern over the casualties and called for credible investigations into the attacks.

The US is committed to supporting Bangladesh during this tumultuous period and values its relationship with the country. As the situation unfolds, the Biden Administration continues to advocate for a democratic transition and the establishment of an interim government that reflects the will of the Bangladeshi people.
