Delhi Coaching Centre Owners Seek Bail Amid CBI Investigation

Four co-owners of the Delhi coaching centre basement, where three civil service aspirants drowned, have moved a Delhi court seeking bail. The incident, which took place in Old Rajinder Nagar, prompted the Delhi High Court to transfer the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure public confidence in the probe.

The co-owners, Parvinder Singh, Tajinder Singh, Harvinder Singh, and Sarbjit Singh, filed their bail applications and are scheduled for a hearing before Principal District and Sessions Judge Anju Bajaj Chandna. The move follows the High Court's decision, highlighting the seriousness of the incident and potential corruption by public servants.

The tragedy occurred after severe waterlogging in the basement led to the deaths of the aspirants. The court's transfer of the case to the CBI is aimed at conducting a more thorough and unbiased investigation. This decision came after a public interest litigation (PIL) sought the constitution of a high-level committee to probe the deaths.

During the hearings, the court criticized the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for failing to maintain the city's infrastructure, which was deemed outdated and insufficient for the growing population. The court emphasized the need for systematic upgrades to the drainage system and the removal of illegal constructions to prevent such incidents.

The Delhi Police, represented by Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain, faced scrutiny from the court for their initial investigation. The court urged a scientific and stress-free approach to the probe, underscoring the importance of accountability and adherence to judicial orders.

The hearing also brought to light the financial challenges faced by civic agencies in Delhi, with the court noting the precarious financial health of the MCD. The court's remarks extended to the broader issues of urban planning and governance, calling for enhanced infrastructure to match the city's population demands.

This case has drawn significant attention to the conditions of coaching centres in Delhi and the regulatory oversight required to ensure the safety of students. The CBI's involvement is expected to bring a more rigorous and transparent investigation process, addressing the concerns of the public and the families of the victims.
